Hiroaki Takahashi Collection
Hiroaki Takahashi (1871–1945), who also went by the names Shotei and Komei, was a Tokyo-born artist known for his work as an illustrator, painter, and woodblock printmaker. Trained in the traditional Nihonga painting style under his uncle, Fuko Matsumoto, during the Taishō era, Takahashi developed a distinctive approach that captured quiet moments of village life, temples, and the natural world. Throughout his career, he collaborated with Shinzaburō Watanabe, a key figure in the Shin Hanga movement, producing hundreds of prints together. Sadly, many of these works were lost in the fires following the Great Kantō earthquake. Even after that devastation, Shotei continued creating until his final years.
