Welcome to Volume 22 of the Curfew Cast collection. This time around Los Angeles by way of New York beat maker, badtouch, served up a 50 minute mix of original instrumentals, tracks, and remixes for your listening pleasure. On May 5th badtouch will be with the Daylight Curfew crew performing a live beat set and our monthly ‘Beat Tape’ Party.
We recently met the prolific producer, DJ, and newly established music video director, Computer Jay, at our monthly Sunday afternoon party, Beat Tape. He passed us along Volume 1 of his 4 part album, Savage Planet Discotheque, a highly recommended collection of warm, crunchy beats, sci-fi inspired textures and samples, along with a few vocal melodies straight from the soul of the 70s. We inquired a bit more about what he’s up to and what is to come.
Introducing our new advice column featuring mix engineer extraordinaire, Joey Raia. Joey will be accepting all questions related to music technology, mixing, recording, and sound in general. Want some tips on how to make your drums bang or your vocals shine? What about tips on soundproofing or how to set up a proper effects chain? On April 7th Core Rhythm will be in Los Angeles with the Daylight Curfew crew performing a live beat set at our monthly party, Beat Tape. Aaaannndddd……The 7′s is back! We’ve recently been hard at work setting up things like our monthly Beat Tape party and getting ready for record releases by Turnbull Green, Dfalt, and Bisco Smith, so we’re excited to bring back our 7″ beat making series. This time around the track is Honey Cone’s 1971 classic, “Stick-Up”.
We recently had the opportunity to chop it up with the artist / musician, Sek3, of the famed YMI crew. He is a long time friend of DLC and is set to jump of the first Beat Tape with us on Sunday March 3rd. With fresh paint on the canvas and a new record on the way. If your in L.A. Recently some freshness landed in our inbox that we thought should be transmitted back to all of you out there. Thrax’s newest release, The Upmost, with production by Raida and Sharp, combines beats that are tough and classic with vocals that embrace ill wordplay, elegance and emotion. Definitely keep an eye out for this team.
Last weekend in Brooklyn the Low Brow Artique opened their show titled “The 4Mula”, a collection of art from the NYC members of the TD4 crew. Daylight Curfew / TD4 artist, Bisco Smith, was in the house showcasing his art and has reported back from planet Brooklyn
We are extremely excited to announce our new monthly party, Beat Tape! Taking place in LA’s Arts District on the first Sunday of every month, Beat Tape is for those who enjoy the classic Sunday afternoon backyard get together. So come out to drink beer, eat tacos, and celebrate beats, art, and life. We’re starting things off on March 3rd with sounds selected by Turnbull Green, Bisco Smith, and Dfalt. Live art will be provided by Sek 3.
Attention all you producers, beatmakers, MCs, and DJs out there, the 7′s is back for another round! This time it’s a sample by the band Doug Clark and The Nuts. The song is from 1966 and titled “Baby Let Me Bang Your Box”. You heard that right, “Baby Let Me Bang Your Box”.
Introducing The 7′s. An ongoing sampling/beatmaking project we’re extending to the Daylight Curfew community. We pick the 7″, we record a small snippet sample and we offer it up to see what you can do with it. To all producers out there, we’re looking forward to seeing how you get involved with this one.

We then retweet those we’re digging the most and present these projects back to the community.
One of the producers that floated near the top of the pile was visual artist / producer, Splatter.

Today’s #OpenTimeline brought many submissions, a ton were retweeted through twitter via Def Jux. We were introduced to a ton of new artists, one being the producer Lost Twin.

While in San Francisco a few weeks back we were introduced to street art / muralist D Young V. Today it is our pleasure to introduce his work to you and extend and share the conversation on his current works.
Last month while crossing West Broadway, I came across Peter Smith. Peter’s studio is located on a curb facing the busy and fashionable streets of Soho. He transforms wire mesh from screen doors into wonderful works of art. Watching Peter’s fingers mold and kneed the wire into his next creation, I was reminded of the great sax players who use their fingers in a similar way; compressing air to create rich, musical tones.
From his Brooklyn, NY beginnings to the present day in Austin, TX. K.C. remains moving his art forward steadily developing his own visual language. From Inspiration to creation and concept to painting, take a closer look into the artists. Enjoy!

This week we chopped it up with musician, painter, designer, and all around creative soul, Brandon Reevey. In late 2011 Brandon released ‘Bright Grey Friday’ a mix of Jazz, hip hop, soul, and electronics. A refreshing mixture of genres and emotions. Devang recently launched his self-titled fashion line, built and designed a solar powered table with designer Mike Low (profiled in the New York Times) and has worked closely with Cassettes Won’t Listen’s Jason Drake and singer Thimali Kodikara on their music collaboration, Eka.

His latest work translates his views and opinions of this insane world by way of the classic bumper sticker medium. A 180 degree departure from his earlier subconscious, self-described “thoughtless” prints.
For this week’s Artist Spotlight we have Derek ‘DJA’ Allen. The man is a music producer, sound designer & DJ currently based in Los Angeles.
Derek Allen has been making music since a teenager, eventually relocating to Philadelphia to work with Diplo and Mad Decent as a producer and engineer.

Today we are proud to spotlight long time DLC compadre Bishop203. As a teen without train yards, Bishop203 turned to the concrete canvases of abandoned factory buildings of Connecticut. On an artists journey that led him south to the train yards of Virginia he further developed his craft. Eventually landing back east in Brooklyn, New York City, where you will find pieces of him all over the city. We sat down with Bishop203 for a few to catch up ask a few questions. Enjoy!
