We recently met the prolific producer, DJ, and newly established music video director, Computer Jay, at our monthly Sunday afternoon party, Beat Tape. He passed us along Volume 1 of his 4 part album, Savage Planet Discotheque, a highly recommended collection of warm, crunchy beats, sci-fi inspired textures and samples, along with a few vocal melodies straight from the soul of the 70s. We inquired a bit more about what he’s up to and what is to come.
Director Ryan Palmieri has recently come on board to help spotlight Daylight Curfew artists. To kick things off he’s pointed the lens to experimental electronic punk, Turnbull Green. Last year’s El-P-produced Killer Mike record, R.A.P. Music, saw it’s fair share of critical praise, leaving fans hungry for more. The melding of El-P’s hard hitting beats from Brooklyn found a perfect match with Killer Mike’s politically charged Southern flow. There was one problem, El-P only appears once, the album’s ninth: “Butane (Champion’s Anthem)”. Well don’t get too down because the duo just posted a snippet from their newest project, Run The Jewels, a project where they’ll share time on the mic while El-P continues to handle the album’s production. The track, “Banana Clipper”, appears on El-P’s Soundcloud and announces this Summer for the album’s release. Dive in and get a taste of what’s headed your way from this dynamic duo.
New York / Paris producer Chaze just dropped a fresh new video, directed by Jay One and titled “This Was Your Town” featuring Casey Mecija. Set in Paris, infamously known as the City of Light, exposes viewers to a raw and more urban side of Parisian streets. To better illustrate his vision, Chaze enlisted the vocal talents of Casey Mecija and artist Jay One, pioneer of French Graffiti.

A new track surfaced yesterday from Dfalt’s soundcloud. The new music, titled “My Mind When She Told Me”, featues Dfalt’s classic use of chopped vocal samples, dusty drums, and haunting melodies. Given the name of the track, this is your chance to experience what it sounds like in Dfalt’s head.
Daylight Curfew’s Turnbull Green will be causing havoc this year down at SXSW. He’ll be holding down the ones and twos for the one and only, Angel Haze. They’ll both be handling a ton of shows down there so check out the schedule after the jump, stop by to give them both some love.
We don’t often push Kickstarter projects but this is one that we feel hits home with us and the Daylight Curfew community. Rubble Kings is a story of NYC’s 1970s gang subculture and how it influenced the cultural phenomenon that is hip hop. Head over to their Kickstarter page for more info on the project and to pick from a plethora of packages.
Aaaannndddd……The 7′s is back! Brooklyn’s own Rabbi Darkside recently jumped off a kickstarter for his a new project ‘Prospect Avenue’. It’s not everyday here at DLC we push a kickstarter project, but Rabbi D and all the good people involved on this record work everyday to make the world better through hip hop, art, and music. We believe they give to the community endlessly, and its about time for them to receive that energy. Only so they can turn around and once again deliver that goodness back to the people.
Recently some freshness landed in our inbox that we thought should be transmitted back to all of you out there. Thrax’s newest release, The Upmost, with production by Raida and Sharp, combines beats that are tough and classic with vocals that embrace ill wordplay, elegance and emotion. Definitely keep an eye out for this team.
We asked Turnbull Green to come in to the Daylight Curfew HQ and man the turntables for an evening. The result is volume 19 of the Curfew Cast and it’s a mix of tracks from Turnbull’s musical family as well as music that makes the man tick.

Fresh Kils is a beast on the MPC! From behind the boards to the stage, there’s not a spot of ground he hasn’t touched. This video surfaced a while ago in celebration of his new website (we are taking a late pass on this one). Kils is working on a lot of fresh material, smashing stages all over the map, and pushing limits on his MPC.
Our friends over at Ghostly International have recently released a new album by Heathered Pearls (aka Jakub Alexander). A beautiful collection of ambient tracks from the producer who “wanted to find a world that was built on repetition, erosion and melody”. The selection paints a perfect backdrop for those looking to wash the day away with lush audio bliss.
It’s back! The next series of The 7′s features a sample from Billy Preston and his 1973 track “Space Race”. The sample has a few great elements that haven’t been introduced in previous samples we’ve offered. So needless to say we’re excited to hear what you guys come up with.

Each sample is taken from a 7″ that we purchase in the used record store directly below the Daylight Curfew HQ in downtown LA.
Chaze, the founder of the French graffiti crew, The Grim Team, just released his first music video for the track “Semivivus”. It’s an eerily dark video shot in first person throughout the streets, catacombs, and metro of Paris. We feel the visuals and music line up hauntingly. Enjoy.
We are proud to announce that our early 2012 release by Bisco Smith and Peter Jay titled Jackson P landed at #33 on the CMJ 2012 hip hop charts. As I sit eagerly awaiting the presidential debate airing tonight, where 15 minutes of the 90 will be dedicated to the issue of Health Care, I skim through a New York Magazine article about Grizzly Bear (Grizzly Bear Members Are Indie-Rock Royalty, But What Does That Buy Them in 2012?). The band has grown to be indie darlings and their success has brought them to honored guests on Jimmy Fallon and selling out shows the likes of Radio City Music Hall. Yet some band members remain without health insurance.
Here is a collection of beats we have been creating too mixed in no particular order. You should play these while you handle your busy-ness.
Iron Lyon is back with a fresh new LP titled ‘From the Ground Up’. A Dj by trade and an MC by heart, dude rocks well. The words are deep, the beats are smooth, and the features are fresh! Enjoy.

In late 2011 Brandon released ‘Bright Grey Friday’ a mix of Jazz, hip hop, soul, and electronics. A refreshing mixture of genres and emotions. The record, a collection of experiences, future sounds, and current inspiration was a starter for this conversation, the rest is in the writing. Take a read, take a listen, and enjoy!
